Research Progress of the Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Cadmium Accumulation in Rice

Abstract: The wide occurrence of Cadmium (Cd)-contaminated rice in China poses significant public health risk. Breeding rice varieties with low-Cd accumulation is an effective strategy to reduce Cd accumulation in rice grain. It is necessary to understand the characteristics of Cd accumulation in rice, its physiological process and related functional genes. Here, we review the advances in physiological and molecular mechanisms of Cd uptake in roots, loading and translocation in xylem, distribution in nodes, redistribution in leaves, and accumulation in grains, which will provide theoretical reference for breeding and safe production of low-Cd rice.
