Abstract: A gene’s promoter is the 5' upstream region of the DNA sequence and it regulates the transcription of a gene. Pathogen-inducible promoters contain cis-acting elements responsive to pathogenic stresses. The cis-acting elements can enhance the transcription of a resistant gene to improve disease resistance in a plant by specifically interacting with transcription factors. This article reviews the pathogen-related cis-acting elements in pathogen-inducible promoters and the transcription factors that interact with these components. It elaborates the mechanism between the transcription activator-like effectors and the target gene promoters in plants. Possible applications and future prospects for these pathogen-responsive cis-acting elements are discussed.
