Abstract: Comparative studies on the anatomical structure of the roots and its aerenchyma of 14 varieties of maritime halophyte were carried out.The results are as follows:there are well_developed mechanical tissues in 5 plants namely Corispermum puberulumIljin.,Salsoda komarovii Iljin., Suaeda glauca (Bunge.) Bunge.,Dianthus chinensis L. and Cynanchum thesioides (Freyn) K. Schnm. No aerenchyma was found in these plants except for Suaeda glauca (Bunge.)Bunge. In the other 9 plants there are well-developed aerenchyma foxming many air passages. Some plants, such as Scutellaria strigillosa Heml., Lathyrus maritimus(L.) Bigel. and Calystegia soldanella (L.) R. Br., have bigger air passages than others. And these plants have either rhizome or horizontal stem. There are two types of intercellular space, schizogenous space and lysigenous space. The aerenchyma is distributed mainly in the cortex and secondery phloem.
