Abstract: This paper describes the succulence of organs of Suaeda salsa seedlings treated with different salts. The growth of the seedlings was markedly enhanced by NaCl but markedly inhibited by NaF treatment. The degree of succulence was the greatest in leaves, second in stems and third in roots of seedlings treated with NaCl. Compared with NaCl treatment, NaHCO3 treatment induced a significant leaf succulence, but there were no obvious succulence appeared in seedlings treated with CaCl2 and KCl. In contrast, MgCl2 treatment significantly decreased leaf succulence. Succulence of S. salsa seedlings induced by NaCl treatment was resulted from the interaction of Na+ and Cl-, and Na+ played a major role. HCO3- played a weak role in succulence, but Mg2+ produced a negative role in succulence.
