Abstract: Rice seedlings were treated with phenol at the rate of 0,50,100 and 150 X 10-6. The aim of this study attempts to investigate the effect of phenol on the growth of rice seedlings. The main results are as follow: Phenol showed inhibition on the growth of rice seedlings, and the inhibition was increased with the increase of concentration, 150 ppm is the optimal concentration. Phenol treatment resulted in a decrease of the length of root and stem. There was strong decrease in fresh weight, dry weight, water content and chlorophyll content of rice seedlings after phenol treatment. Application of phenol brought about the decrease of nitrate reductase activity and peroxidase activity in rice seedlings.
