Abstract: One variegated plantlet resulting from chlorophyll loss of partly parenchymal tissue was obtained from the adventitious shoots regenerated from callus of Anthurium. Three types of chimeras were achieved in the process of propagation by indirect shoot regeneration via callus or axillary bud emergence, namely variegated types, albino types, and jade-green types, in which the chlorophyll content was lower than that of the normal in vitro plantlets. Anatomy structure of leaves indicated the consistency of phenotypes and chlorophyll distribution but little difference between the jade-green leaf and the normal leaf. One cell layer constitutes the tunica, and thus no L2 layer can be defined. So all the parenchymal cells were derived from meristem cells in corpus, which divided in all directions. This tissue structure explains the irregular distribution of parenchymal cells containing chloroplasts or not. The chimeras, especially the variegated plantlets, might be potential breeding materials or new cultivars.
