Plants have evolved a continuously co-evolutionary and sophisticated immune surveillance system to help themselves adapt to environmental changes. Disease resistance (R) proteins play an important role in activating potent defense responses by recognizing specific effectors to protect against microbial infection. In this review, we outline recent progress in plant R proteins, focusing on the structure and function, pathogen recognition, homeostasis control mechanisms, and potential activation mechanisms in R-mediated defense responses. These studies provide valuable information for developing transgenic plants with improved pathogen resistance.
