Abstract: Caspases are essential to programmed cell death (PCD) in animals. Vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs), metacaspases and saspases with caspase-like protease activity play an important role in plant PCD. This paper summarizes the differences in PCD between animals and plants and discusses the possible function of caspase-like enzymes in plants.
