Abstract: Chromosome number and morphology in meristematic cells of root tips from seedling of Phragmites communis were studies. 96 chromosomes were counted for this species. The chromosomes in the mitotic metaphase complement varied gradually in the size. By the chromosome size and the morphology of mitotic metaphase chromosome, 96 chromosomes were grouped into 8 homogenetic haploid complementes. The haploid complement consisted of 11 metacentric chromosomes and 1 submetacentric chromosome.
